Who We are?

Led by Executive Director Dr. Verna Gardner, affectionately known as "Dr. V," G.I.F.T.E.D. emerged as the brainchild of a diverse group of graduate students spanning various disciplines. Each member brought a compelling personal narrative, underscoring the transformative journey that led them to their current roles and acknowledging the invaluable influence of their “village” along their paths in shaping their success. In Dr. V’s case, the village was literal. Her early engagement in human services during her pre-teen years in a small Central American town, where she started as a sitter. After legally migrating to the United States, she immersed herself in Early Childhood Education, steadily advancing in her field. Raising in her field, she eventually took the helm of a business had $2.36M in annual revenue, with daily responsibility for almost 300 people. Never one to rest on yesterday’s achievements, Dr. V embarked on a decade-long educational journey, balancing work and night classes to earn a Bachelor's degree from UCLA, along with Master's and Doctorate degrees in Social Work from USC. (Yes, that’s right! She’s a Brujan. She has the best of both worlds.) Returning to school was not merely an academic pursuit, but a strategic investment to enhance her ability to scale community service effectively. Following her formal education, she ventured into entrepreneurship, founding a seven-figure business. Despite her professional success, Dr. V's motivation extends beyond financial gain. Inspired by the impact of her community on her own trajectory, she experienced a renewed call to service. G.I.F.T.E.D. is not merely a labor of love for Dr. V; it symbolizes a profound commitment to community-building. Marked by resilience, education, and entrepreneurship, her multifaceted journey underscores the organization's dedication to creating positive change and fostering empowered, supportive communities.
